When I was much younger, my family adopted two cats that had been together their entire lives, Cool-B and Floyd. Sadly, Floyd got very sick. We took Floyd as Cool-B watched and took him to the vet for the last time. When Floyd passed away, Cool-B of course dramatically changed. He would always be searching for Floyd, crying, calling for him every night. I would often cry with him, missing Floyd.

This game is a speed-based platformer about Cool-B's journey to find Floyd. Levels are randomly generated as you play, and you're presented with many different kinds of challenges that are different each time. Created entirely by one person, all aspects of the game are very personal and are meant to be looked at in a personal way. Everything from the speed-based tight-control gameplay and Scottish fiddle and chiptune music to the childish visual style is purposefully put together to embody Cool-B's heart as he searches for his brother in this game about never giving up.

Hello IGF!

Our team, Range Plus One, based out of The Art Institute of Vancouver, is extremely proud to submit the alpha build of our game, Fatal Velocity, to be considered for IGF's 2013 Student Competition. The game, as of the date of submission, will have been in development for five months, including preproduction.

As with most indie developers, we've pushed for innovation and uniqueness in our game. Built in UDK, we've created a first person shooter where the shooting is not the forefront of the gameplay. Our game emphasizes quick and creative thinking, such as pulling enemies into a gravity beam you've created to suck enemies into a lethal pit of fire. Our game embodies the concept of 3D gameplay, where the vertical axis is just as important as the other two and players have numerous options when it comes to mobility, either equipping a jetpack or using the force of a grenade to fly over the level. Finally, to even further distance ourselves from the competition, our game is multiplayer.

Find Me A Good One is a surreal puzzle platformer that explores responsibility felt by players towards non-playing fictional characters. In it, the player must explore a visually rich dreamscape to find dreams to fend off the nightmares encroaching on their brother or play with the toys offered up by the world.

Although the brother in Find Me A Good One is clearly dependent on the player, it is up to her to decide how much she is or is not helping her sibling. Find Me A Good One allows the player to be diligent in her responsibility, or shirk it in order to further explore the dreamscape of the game. Because the system does not assign value to her actions, the player is left to judge her own actions and the effect they have on her virtual brother.

Fugue is a point-and-click exploration game where players are assigned a persona and explore a fantasy world, the Fugue Meadows, which is guarded by "the Maiden of the Fountain." In this hidden world, one's actions are guided by tarot cards, a gift received from the Maiden upon entering. Free to spend a day in the Meadows, the player moves from event to event, using their cards to determine the outcomes of their travels with outcomes that are often unexpected and entertaining. Will you choose to be a benevolent, kindly good samaritan? A fierce and commanding loner? Or a clever, funny trickster? The answer to this question is in the cards...

Research Statement
Fugue is a game about choosing what sorts of actions you want to take. The game provides each player with a persona at the opening of the game, but that's just a starting point. Will players hew to that persona, choosing tarot cards that represent actions the character might take? That's one option... or they may play their own personal desires and choose cards the player might take... or cards they think are appropriate for a game in the point-and-click adventure genre. By giving players an opportunity to build their action palette, the game offers the researcher an opportunity to examine the relationship between the player and how they wish to be represented through play.

Go Go Games is a suite of casual games to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in learning to quickly notice multiple features of the objects in the world around them – a specific perceptual skill that is essential to learning and comes naturally to most children, but is known to be a common difficulty for those with ASD.

Go Go Games uses the techniques of Pivotal Response Therapy (PRT), an evidence-based behavioral intervention which targets several common challenges for learners with ASD, including this particular perceptual ability. The games provide the opportunity to build this critical skill by maneuvering trucks, trains, and spaceships through a trio of fantasy adventures. We designed them to be simple, playful, and fun – though behind the scenes each matching sequence is carefully selected to gradually improve a player's ability to notice and respond to increasingly complex features.

We are very excited to translate a proven therapy into game format!

"Go Kinok! Go!" is a 2.5D platformer that aims to inject modern game design with a healthy dose of speed. This may remind you of a certain speedy blue legend. You wouldn't be wrong. Still, this is not about gaming icons. It's about an up and coming fellow who just wants to go fast.

- With enough speed, Kinok can launch into "Bullet Mode" where our friendly toaster / bullet / hero (You decide!) turns into an unstoppable speed demon. As we all know, true speed demons are also invincible. Encouragement for those that keep the speed.

- During "Bullet Mode", Kinok blasts everything in its path. While our hero can jump on enemies' heads to defeat them, with Bullet Mode a single touch from any angle will shoot them like a mad rocket. Now try to play the whole level in Bullet Mode.

- From breezy Albroz mountains to lush northern jugnles, Kinok's travels will take him to all sorts of Persian environments. Unique enemies with different brands of dashing semi-facial features await (More on that later!).

- Literally 2.5D: The game world is a true 2D platform with while the hero and his enemies are made of 3D polygons but designed in a way to blend with the 2D elements. After all, who likes simple 2 dimensional characters?

- There's also something about an over ambitious news reporter and aliens but don't let them distract you from the heart of Go Kinok! Go!: Platforming in beautifully hand drawn worlds and doing it with speed and style.

Good Morning, Bird is a musical platformer. Most "music" games use music simply as audio feedback, which is functionally the same as using simple sound effects. However, music is sound in time. By taking advantage of this fact, Good Morning, Bird creates a world where everything is tied to the music to give the player intuition for the way the world behaves. The order given by this musicality helps the player to understand not only what has happened, but what will happen, enabling players to do things which would be otherwise too difficult. In the game, you play as a newly hatched egg exploring the world for the first time. Avoid the snakes and badgers, but collect the musical notes.
