The Night Journey is a collaboration between renowned media artist Bill Viola and designers at the USC Game Innovation Lab, it uses both game and video techniques to tell the universal story of an individual's journey towards enlightenment.

After being exhibited as an art installation around the world for the past decade, this foundational videogame artwork has now been released for home platforms. Updated and remastered with new, original dream footage, the project stands as a milestone in the search to expand the boundaries of what game experiences may communicate through their game mechanics and world design.

The game takes place in a mysterious landscape on which darkness is falling. There is no one path to take, no single goal to achieve, but the player's actions will reflect on themselves and the world, transforming and changing them both. If they are able, they may slow down time itself and forestall the fall of darkness. If not, there is always another chance; the darkness will bring dreams that enlighten future journeys.

This work visualizes the ephemerality of our lives. Whether it is happy or sad, everything we experience changes and eventually vanishes. Everything is like the temporary waves of the surf although there is the eternal flow of the ocean. We often feel painful or make mistakes because we forget the apparent fact that everything just passes away.

However, it is not just disappearance but also a change as a part of the whole. Our existence is one of limited perception. We perceive parts not seeing the whole. We are the wave but also the ocean.

Users can bring their own image files into this application. It then converts those files into images that are composed of a few threads that are parts of the whole net. When a user hits a "target" with the click of a mouse, the converted images appear, change and return to the whole. The rectangular frame of the converted images implies the frame of our cognitive perception. We only recognize things contained inside our frame; we can identify parts while the whole remains uncatchable, incomprehensible.

The application uses the interaction of shooter games in a familiar but different way. When a user hits a target, something new is formed. However, everything formed changes and vanishes as a part of the whole. No matter how hard users try as they play this game, they cannot hold onto anything. They confront ephemerality. Playing this game is a metaphor of our lives.

"Every young man from your clan must prove himself worthy. To do so one must set forth on a quest and slay the voracious demon. You have waited for this your whole life. Now it is your time."

Voracious is a hack and slash action game that tells a story of lust and greed. The game is inspired by classic fantasy action games (Golden Axe, Rastan) where the hero fights hordes of enemies. In Voracious however, the story is more important than the thrill of simple combat. This is not a story about revenge or treasure hunting but a story about humanity's worst traits – greed and lust for power. The art style goes further into simplicity than common retro pixel games. It uses ultra-simple black and white vector graphics.
