Start your journey in the ancient Persian Empire as the heroine Shahrzad, who can turn words into reality! To take revenge on the evil king, you'll need to tell stories that lead him to mention weapons, turning them into blades for your fight…

The rapid advancement of AI technologies has caused controversy and fatigue. Much of the discussion focuses on using AI to generate assets, seemingly advocating for AI to replace creative labor. Yet, as creators, we have found a unique ludic capability in AI as a medium for real-time interactive storytelling. Is there a way to use AI in games that is both ethically considerate and creatively fulfilling? Can we let AI tell our story which is literary, not about tech itself?

We don't have the answers, but games can open up more discussion. "1001 Nights," is an experimental narrative game adapted from Persian folklore. The game was nominated by 2024 A MAZE. The game art is all created by artists – AI is used solely for gameplay. We have also published two papers about our narrative system.

In this game, the evil king Shahryar marries a girl each day only to execute her the following morning. The player, as the storyteller Shahrzad, becomes his next bride. She possesses the secret magic to turn language into reality. Players need to strategically guide the King to narrate tales together with weapon words, such as 'sword' or 'shield' ... These will materialise as weapons to fight the king. This approach creates a form of collaborative storytelling where the player must use their imagination and creativity.

Powered by generative AI (large language models and stable diffusion), this game hopes to explore the boundary of reality and fiction. Shahrzad seeks to reshape her destiny, challenging patriarchal norms. Players redefine the game's boundaries, crafting stories that surpass authorial constraints.

A Game Called Paako is a pixel-art text adventure 2D platformer metagame, made by a USC Games student from China. It tells the story of the whole process of "C.Huang" developing his thesis game project named "A Game Called Paako".

Like many other "meta-games", Paako's story involves the perspective of game devs, specifically, a student game dev about to enter the game industry. But what really sets it apart in this genre is its honest documentation of its own creative process. "Can a video game really describe how itself was made?" Paako aims to take up this challenge.

The story is told not only through dialogue, but also through moderately difficult platforming levels and dozens of different mini-games. As (sort of) an autobiography of Chaoran, it also delves into a student game designer's inner world, revealing private feelings and thoughts about dream-chasing, while also paying homage to many games that inspired this game.

Addlemoth is a turn-based combat focused puzzle game, inspired by puzzle classics like DROD, with a classic pixel art style.

When Alexandra receives a letter bearing the wax seal of a moth, asking for her family's aid in sealing away demons, she wasn't really sure what to make of it, but she knows that she has to follow it through. Guide her through the challenges, discover what had happened in long-forgotten ruins, solve her way through devious traps and puzzles, and maybe even make a few friends along the way.

A mystical, magical sokoban puzzler about letting go. After the loss of her beloved partner, Alice is left with seven emotionally resonant artefacts. She embarks on a journey to revisit seven of their favourite places and cast each artefact into an abyss, so she can be free of her grief. The game's story serves as an emotionally resonant and reflective undercurrent of love and loss, reconnecting with nature, and letting go of old memories that are holding you back. It casts the puzzle mechanics in a new light, as metaphors for these themes.

As Alice, venture out into a serene overworld, with 7 artefacts your lost love Aura left behind. As you puzzle through each world, you bring the artefacts from portal to portal, until you reach the special places where each one can be cast into an abyss, allowing Alice to unfold into a freer and lighter person, one step closer to completely letting go.

Gameplay
After Light Fades is a sokoban with a rich and magical ruleset, with a feast of elements that players can get creative with. Everything from using fire to melt ice, connecting electric circuits, magnets, fire propagation, growing vines, magic mirrors, clones, teleports, angels, transmutation and so much more! Much of the uniqueness of the puzzle solving comes not in the typical hero-to-object relationship, but in the relationships objects have with each other - a key can't be pushed but energy can push a key, an angel be used to tow a crystal, a crystal can transmute earth into energy, and so on. These puzzle mechanics are all rich metaphors for Alice's journey of grieving, letting go, and thus transforming herself into the higher form of an alchemist.

Story
Alice embarks on her journey after her partner Aura's tragic death in a house fire. Sifting through the ashes, Alice finds the seven artefacts. Compelled by mysterious emotions tied to these items, Alice resolves to visit seven significant places they shared, casting each artefact into an abyss, to let go and find solace. Each artefact represents a stage of Alice's healing and unlocks a realm reflecting its nature. Feather Fields challenges her toward vulnerability. Glimmer Cove is an oasis of fools-gold treasures that unlocks a deeper grief. The Crystal Lagoon brings clarity but hardens Alice's heart. The mountains of Echo Peaks show a vista of the patterns of the journey-so-far. Finally, in the the Ever-Shifting Manor, Alice realizes the true extent of her abilities, threading a way home as a reality-transforming alchemist.

As Alice travels, silently-watching guardian spirits recognize her abilities, eventually inviting her into the secrets of alchemy and towards one final revelation that casts her whole journey in a new light!

Afterplace is an adventurous indie game for mobile devices, made entirely by one person. It's a huge open world, full of hidden secrets, treasures, and creatures. You'll run around the woods, fight monsters, and talk to ostensibly shady characters - all from your pocket! Be warned though: you never know what the forest might be hiding, and not all trails are paved. Labyrinths and dungeons are tucked away in the most concealed nooks. There are no waypoints in Afterplace. You'll have to forge your own path.

Afterplace has been designed from the ground up to be a fast, fluid, beautiful experience for mobile. There are no virtual buttons. You can move and attack by touching anywhere. You can tap objects directly to interact or attack, or use two thumbs like a traditional controller. The game will adapt dynamically to your play style. Pick up and set down the game at your own pace, it will always save your progress. Afterplace is made to feel like a full-fledged indie adventure game that fits in your pocket.

The game won an Apple Design Award for Delight and Fun in 2023, and was one of three finalists for iOS Game of the Year.

Players take on the role of a dad struggling to get through a hectic day of child-reading challenges without stressing out. Each day comprises six randomly arranged minigames with a "downtime" moment in the middle to recoup stress and explore some story vignettes. When the player completes all of the minigames the day ends, giving dads a moment to reflect via a branching-narrative inner monolog.

BYTE is a tactics RPG that adapts the classic novel Dracula, by Bram Stoker, with an emphasis on themes of queerness and technology. You play as Jonathan Harker, Dracula's real estate agent, completing work tasks while exploring the castle, speaking with its inhabitants, and hacking into computers.

BYTE takes place in Detroit, Oregon in the 1980s. Dracula hires Jonathan Harker to help him purchase properties using the help of fax machines, telephones, and the internet. BYTE's story happens in visual novel scenes, where Jonathan talks with the other characters and delivers his own intricate internal monologue. Combat occurs when Jonathan needs to hack into a computer. Hacking takes the form of grid-based tactics battles where Jonathan needs to accomplish tasks rather than directly fight enemies. Tasks can include collecting data, getting through firewalls, installing software, and more.

Clock is a chill and therapeutic experience that dives into the whole concept of time, exploring how we perceive it and deal with feeling disconnected as we grow up. One morning, 27-year-old Joanna notices something weird: the clock in her bathroom is ticking way too loudly. She finally takes a moment to really look at herself in the mirror. As the steam clears, her mirror turns into a 'life clock,' letting her go back and revisit her past.

Join Joanna as she relives key moments through interactive scenes—like competing in a drawing contest, immersing herself in high school music moments, making college decisions, figuring out signal processing in engineering class, and stressing over job hunting. These memories make Joanna rethink what time means to her—whether it's the focused moments while drawing, the peaceful and joyful times with music, the anxiety and uncertainty before big decisions, or the delayed realizations of life's lessons. It is all about time, with no good or bad.

This journey is a conversation with herself, a series of memories that help Joanna understand and accept her past. As the clock starts ticking again, she knows what her next steps are.

Color Cocktail is a fast paced arcade style game which challenges you to mix red, green and blue to create the perfect shade of beverage that the customer wants.

Confined is a short horror-puzzle game where you have three minutes to solve a puzzle to escape a kidnapper's grungy, dangerous basement.

The concept behind my game revolves around the player waking up disoriented in a dark basement. The only clue is a VHS tape labeled "Play me" next to a television. Once the tape is inserted, instructions appear on the screen, informing the player that they have 3 minutes to escape the basement by finding four hidden numbers, and these numbers form the keycode to unlock a safe containing the key to freedom.
My goal was to design a gameplay flow that fits the 3-minute time limit while balancing the difficulty of finding the numbers—not too easy but not frustratingly hard. The first number is immediately visible in a bucket, but the others are cleverly hidden.
To retrieve the first hidden number, the player must find a toilet, flush it, and retrieve a screwdriver hidden inside. This screwdriver is crucial for unscrewing a vent, where the first hidden number is revealed, along with a glowing crowbar used to find the next number.
The character provides in-game dialogue to guide the player on how to use the items they collect. For example, after walking over a creaky carpet, the player might notice a blood trail and wood planks poking out, hinting that there's something beneath. By removing the carpet and using the crowbar to pry up the planks, the second number is revealed.
The last number is concealed behind two box crates. To help the player, I included subtle hints like a food tray with two items and one pointing toward the crates and even two crates, reinforcing the significance of the number "2."
Once all four numbers are collected, the player must input them into the keypad in the correct order from how they were found: 41222. If entered correctly, the safe unlocks, revealing the key. If the player successfully escapes within the 3-minute limit, they experience the "True Ending."
In the "True Ending," after escaping, a new scene unfolds, showing the same basement in the future, now renovated and inhabited. A new character, having just watched the VHS tape, realizes they are in the same basement. Seconds later the view switches to a surveillance camera, revealing the killer still lurking, implying he still lives in the house.
If the player fails to escape in time, they encounter the "Bad Ending." The sound of a car arriving outside, followed by footsteps approaching, builds tension until the killer appears, ending the game in a fatal confrontation.
My inspiration for creating Confined stemmed from a mix of influences, including the eerie atmosphere of Silent Hill, the suspense and tension of 1980s slasher films, and the psychological horror of the modern film Black Phone. However, to truly capture the unsettling mood I envisioned, I knew these influences alone wouldn't suffice. To enhance the game's immersive experience, I decided to incorporate a VHS effect, paired with low poly graphics, which together evoke a nostalgic yet unsettling vibe that draws players deeper into the world of Confined.

Corporation Inc. puts the players into the shoes of Maria Villalobos, a 25-year-old Honduran native who comes to the United States to work at Corporation Incorporated as their new hiring manager in their 'revitalization program'. Maria is put on a one-week trial in which she must review 25 applicants daily while judging their qualifications and skillsets. In addition to working against a ticking clock, she has to exercise critical thinking while navigating a skeptical boss, a lousy friend, and the discrimination most immigrants face upon their arrival to America. It's up to the player how they navigate their first week at Corporation Incorporated.

Corporation Inc. is a game created by students in the Game Narrative Lab at KSU, and published and distributed by the KSU Game Studio, an organization within Kennesaw State University that supports the commercial production and distribution of games developed by faculty, staff, and students at the university.

You land on a frozen planet in a tiny rocket with a robot inside. Harvest and combine materials to discover new ones. Use visual programming to make the robot do the tiresome work for you. Slowly build a gang of self-sustaining robot workers and watch them terraform the planet.

Crestfallen: Medieval Survival is an immersive journey into a realm where the land itself seems to breathe with ancient mysteries and untamed power. Set in the crumbling remnants of a once-great kingdom, players are thrust into a world of harrowing survival, where every choice shapes their path. The wilderness is unforgiving, teeming with marauding bandits, ravenous beasts, and the eerie whispers of forgotten ruins. But it's not just brute force that determines one's fate—players must master the delicate art of crafting, diplomacy, and tactical strategy. Knock down targets as you race to trigger unique effects on track that you can use to your advantage. Collect wacky items that can be used to mess with other racers or enhance your driving capabilities.

Master Each Bumper Car
Fastival features four different types of bumper cars that players can choose from each with unique driving strengths and weaknesses. The Shark car boasts a higher top speed but is more challenging to control while the Vintage car is slower to accelerate but heavier, allowing you to utilize drifting to your advantage more often.

Knock Down Targets to Affect the Race
In Fastival, you can gain an advantage as you race through unique interactions with the environment. Knock down targets in each race by driving through them to trigger a temporary effect on the racetrack. Some targets will reveal a shorter path while others activate hazards that other racers must steer clear of.

Use Items to Take Out the Competition
As you race collect carnival tickets that will turn into one of 5 fun items. Activate a firecracker to launch yourself forward and gain temporary invincibility or throw a volley of water balloons at other racers to spin out their vehicles.

You play as a sick child in hospital, who finds escapism through a 2D pixel art platformer on their tv. Around their room are also minigames to help distract the child, such as racing a remote controlled car on the floor and throwing paper airplanes into bins!

Iron Roads is a top-down 2D train management game for Desktop and Mobile. Players lay tracks, buy trains and set their routes to move passengers and cargo across the map.

The minimalistic interface makes it approachable for those not experienced with the genre, but also encourages deep and sophisticated gameplay. There is a special focus on optimisation. Towns grow, which increases passenger counts, and in turn requires an expanded and refined network to keep the opinionated animal passengers happy.

Iron Roads' main gameplay is in a set of hand-crafted scenarios with distinct narratives and features, however there is also a timed challenge mode, and a sandbox mode where players can set parameters and play the way they want.

Jordi & Oslo and the Lost Tail is a humorous point-and-click adventure game based on the comic strip of the same name, which appears weekly in a Catalan newspaper. Kneedle Knight is a third-person puzzle platformer game developed by students at SMU Guildhall Cohort 32. In Kneedle Knight, the player controls a mouse knight that uses his magical needle to sew fabric which he can merge into, moving back and forth between 3D and 2D.

Sir Lukoss the Small was a noble knight sent on a quest to defeat the evil Witch of Fabric. The Witch, using her enchanted fabric, imprisoned and transformed many citizens and knights into malicious fabrications. Sir Lukoss climbed up through her fortress to put an end to her tyranny, only to be hexed by her magic and transformed into a mouse. In the dark dungeon of the Witch's lair, the mouse finds a magic needle, granting him special powers to sew fabric of his own and merge in and out of the enchanted threadwork.

Now Sir Lukoss must use his newfound weapon to sew his path forward and up through the evil stronghold. The mouse knight can use his needle to solve puzzles, overcome challenging obstacles, and defeat the animated candle minions of the Witch. All with the hopes of returning to face the Witch of Fabric yet again to finish his noble quest.

Light is a short interactive narrative experience made using Unreal Engine 5 and Blender.
It is about our protagonist Arul, who is on a journey to find his light while being held back by multiple problems.
It is set in the mind of Arul and that setting is based on the landscapes, culture, and beliefs of the southern state of India, Tamil Nadu.
Light was Written, Directed, and Designed by Muhil V (me) from the MA Digital Direction course at the Royal College of Art, London. The uplifting and vibrant Tamil 'Kuthu' music was made by Udhayanan C.

It aims to share the values of introspective meditation and mindfulness through a naturally flowing narrative rather than being too direct. The audience will also take away some key knowledge through the 'learn by doing' approach. The Game is extremely cinematic and musical which will make the audience fall in love with the world and make it more immersive.
The pilot version of Light premiered as a multiscreen cinematic version at Outernet, London on July 24th, 2024 and is currently being screened to the public everyday.
